One such event will be held at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 5 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

It is The Northwestern Singers’ 12th annual benefit concert “Why We Sing,” which raises funds for the school groups featured in the show. Over the years, The Northwestern Singers Benefit concerts have raised over $30,000 for area school music programs.

This concert will offer a unique opportunity to experience a student’s development through Austin’s music education program. It features performances by The Northwestern Singers, Austinaires, and Pacelli Singers, as well as Ellis Middle School, Neveln Elementary, and Banfield Elementary.

The participating elementary and middle school choirs rotate each year. This year’s concert will also feature the guest group Up ‘til 2, a vocal band co-founded by Austin native Donovan Germain, who got his start singing at Southgate Elementary and in Austinaires.

When asked about his musical education in Austin, Donovan said, “From elementary music class all the way up to high school choir, Austin Youth Music programs and the teachers who drive them are an extremely critical part of what made me the musician I am today.”

Over the years, this event has become wildly popular. In fact, according to long-time Northwestern Singer Alice Holst, patrons are encouraged to buy tickets early because the event quickly sells out. Tickets are $8 and are available at Hy-Vee, St. Edward’s Parish Office, and from any Northwestern Singer. Buy yours today and help support Austin’s music programs.
