Blue Devil men dominate extra session in win over WWTC

While the snow piled up outside, the Blue Devils were piling up clutch plays Tuesday night.
The Riverland men’s basketball finished strong in a 75-63 overtime win over Western Wisconsin Tech in Riverland Gym.
The Blue Devils (3-6 overall) survived a late scare in regulation to dominate the overtime session, scoring nine straight points after WWTC’s Nick Perkins missed a breakaway jam that would’ve put the Cavaliers up 62-60.
Instead, Brian Voigt hit a transition runner on the other end with 4:07 left in the game that triggered RCC’s run.
“That was a four-point swing and it was huge,” said Voigt, a Southland grad who scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. “We knew in overtime we would pull away because we felt we were energized and they were running on empty.”
The overtime period would’ve never happened if not for a big three-pointer by Khirey Floyd, a transfer from Orange Coast College in Calif.
RCC trailed 58-53 with 3:13 left in regulation, but Josh Davis converted a post move for a score to make it 55-52 and Floyd drilled a baseline three with 1:13 left to tie things up at 58.
“Playing as a kid, those are the shots you live for,” said Floyd, who scored 12 points, while grabbing 10 boards. “I’m glad my teammates trusted me to take such a big shot.”
Floyd would miss the front end of a one-and-one with 4.3 seconds left in regulation that would’ve put the Blue Devils ahead, but he responded by scoring five points in OT — including a three-point play that made it 67-60.
“I wanted to get it over with (in regulation),” Floyd said. “But we kept going hard and we came together in OT.”
RCC had led throughout the night until WWTC rallied for 10 straight points to take a 57-53 lead with 3:23 left.
The Blue Devils were hurt over that stretch when Derek Hahn, who scored 16 points and hit four threes, missed about eight minutes with a head injury.
“If Derek wasn’t out for that last stretch, it might have been different,” RCC head coach Dan Swift said. “When he’s on, he can hit from almost anywhere in the gym.”
RCC had 26 turnovers, but when it ran it’s offense, it had some success — hitting 11 threes on the night. On defense, the Blue Devils held WWTC to 27 percent shooting from the field.
“If we’re careful with the ball, anything’s possible with the way we play defense,” Voigt said.
RCC played a solid first half as it jumped out to a 35-26 advantage.
“This is exactly what we needed,” Swift said. “Our guys played well together and they swung the ball around when they had to.”
