The Austin boys soccer team had a solid second half go for not as a late goal by Rochester Century handed the Packers a 2-1 loss at Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.

Century’s Jacob Nelson knocked in a header on a crossing pass from Mohamed Noor with 19 seconds left in the contest to give the Panthers (4-1 overall) the win.

Nelson came flying across the middle and hit a perfectly timed ball into the back of the net.

“It’s always hard to be a defenseman because if they score it’s their fault and if they don’t it’s just what they have to do,” Austin forward Nick Brehmer said. “They let one go. But it was a nice goal and it wasn’t there fault at all.”

Brehmer tied the game for the Packers (1-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 Big Nine) when he hooked a 25-yard shot inside the right post in the 45th minute.

“I was aiming right and I couldn’t have ever hoped for it to be that good a shot,” said Brehmer, a sophomore. “I wouldn’t want to ever put money on being able to do it again.”

That goal gave Austin momentum as it fired off a few scoring opportunities over the next 30 minutes. But none of them resulted in a goal.

“The only thing we didn’t do is get that second goal,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “We created the opportunities and we made the passes, I’m sure we out-shot them and out-passed them but we just didn’t get it in.”

Century scored the game’s first goal just under three minutes into the game when Benjamin Harvey got free and chipped a lob over the head of Austin goalie Jesus Alejo.

“You’ve got to show up to play as soon as they blow the whistle,” Levisen said. “We don’t show up and say we’re only going to play 75 minutes today. They caught us and we shouldn’t have been caught, but they got it.”

The Packers had a few chances to tie things up in the first half as Jake Hagen-Erickson had a header go over the cross bar by a couple of feet and Dante Ortiz missed just wide left by a couple of feet on a 20-yard shot.

Alejo kept the Packers in it by making a big save on a breakaway with five minutes left in the first half.

While Austin is playing a lot of players this season, Brehmer said it should only be a matter of time before they fully gel on the field.

“We have just as much talent as last year,” he said. “That team played together since they were seven and this team has been on three separate teams and hasn’t played together as much. Now we’re practicing together and hanging out and we’re getting close.”
