LYLE — It didn’t start out how they wanted it to, but after a little regrouping the Cardinals volleyball stepped up their game and closed out Lyle/Pacelli in dominating fashion in Lyle Thursday.

The Cardinals (3-1 overall, 3-1 SEC) won in three games, but they fell behind 2-0 to start the night as L/P’s Ann Rysavy served an ace and L/O had to grind out a 25-12 game in the opener.

Chanda Riedemann opened up the second game with a kill, which triggered a 20-point serving run by junior Krista Bunne to make it a 21-0 game. L/O’s Kylie Grant ended the run when she hit a ball into the net.

“I was just trying to get them over and be consistent. I wasn’t trying to serve them too hard,” said Bunne, who had six aces during the streak. “This isn’t going to be one of those years where we don’t play good against bad teams.”

Bunne was just 43 percent on her serves in a match last week, but she recovered by going 30-for-31 Thursday. L/P only returned three of her serves during the rally.

Bunne said that the first game struggles served as motivation for the Cardinals.

“We all talked and decided we were stooping down to the other team’s level. We decided we were going to come out with a different attitude,” she said.

The Cards came out attacking in the third game as Jessica Jennings served 11 straight points to start it and they ended up closing out the Athletics (0-3 overall, 0-3 SEC) 25-5.

“We saw a lot of good things, but we need to work on our serve receiving and our serving,” L/P head coach Jamie Zielke said. “On defense, we’re picking up balls that we wouldn’t have looked at two weeks ago. We’re showing improvements.”
