The City of Austin currently has $175,000 remaining from a grant awarded to it by the Department of Employment and Economic Development, and the City Council will be deciding Monday evening whether or not the remaining funds will be used to purchase parcels of land throughout Austin that are vulnerable to flooding.

According to City Administrator Jim Hurm, the parcels could potentially be used as part of the linear park system, depending on their location, or they may remain vacant until further notice.

Hurm said the city has purchased over 300 parcels for the purpose of flood mitigation since the 1970s.

Public hearing regarding rezoning request

City Council will be holding a public hearing as part of its regular meeting Monday evening to discuss a property rezoning request.

The petitioner would like to rezone his property, located at the 1300 block of 10th Dr. SE in Austin, from a single-family residence district to a limited industrial district, and the public hearing will address whether or not the approval of this request will be offensive to the surrounding area.

Sidewalk assessment policy

Council members will be discussing the approval of a sidewalk assessment policy in which Austin residents whose sidewalks are being fixed by the city can have the improvement assessed.

Residents are currently unable to assess the cost of such improvements.

The City Council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening in the council chambers.
