Mr. Wallace Alcorn,
The idea from your Oct. 21 column (Vote in 2012 will be on gay marriage amendment) that taking the rights away from gays is not stealing because they never had those rights is absurd.
We are all born with the same rights. Sexual orientation is not a reason that a person should be denied the rights that other U.S. citizens have.
You state, “Nothing would be taken away from them, because they do not have it and never have had it and should never gain it.” What gives you the right to say that homosexuals should never have those rights? What if you had a gay son or daughter, would you still feel the same? You discuss how the main goal of the gay community is to overturn laws and challenge societal norms. Wouldn’t you stand up for your right if someone told you that you could not marry the person you love?
We are all human and deserve the right to stand up for ourselves. You claim, “Marriage of siblings and cousins is not a civil right, and law prohibits any such attempt. So, too, is it not a civil right for a parent to marry his or her child whether same sex or other sex … All this is illegal and has always been.”
This is extremely ignorant on your part. Are you aware that if family members try to reproduce there is huge genetic diseases associated with incest? A same sex couple is not physically able to reproduce, but they do have the ability to save a child that was born into an abusive family. These two incidents are in no way related and should not compared. It would be like comparing a car to a baby, absolutely no relation. Equating incest and same sex marriage is ignorant and childish.
When you state, “First defeat a constitutional amendment, then claim existing law to be unconstitutional, then legalize same-sex marriage, then denigrate heterosexual marriage, and then …” This to me, sounds like nothing but homophobia. If you really are insinuating that by allowing gays to marry, that we are on a path to end the human race, you are exceptionally ignorant.
I have a reality check for you: not allowing gays to marry does not mean that they will go away.
Best,
Ericka Frazier,
