Carlyle Junes Mathson, 77, of Lyle, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, 2010. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, to Mathias and Clara Amelia (Halverson) Matson in Gary, S. D. After graduation from high school and two years in Vo-Tech, Carlyle served in the Army from July 1954 until May 1956, stationed in Germany. He married Virginia Paulson on Oct. 11, 1958, in Brainerd. They made their home in Aurora for more than 30 years where he was a mining company plant mechanic. He was also a sheriff’s deputy in St. Louis County. They moved to Omaha, Neb., where they were condominium caretakers for three years. They have lived in Lyle since 1991. A member of Christian Motorcycle Association, Carlyle was trustee, chairman, teacher and deacon in the church. He loved his grandchildren, the outdoors, hunting, fishing and cutting firewood. He will be remembered as a family patriarch, Christian leader and prayer warrior.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Lyle; three sons: Kirby (Tammi) Mathson of Embarrass; David (Renae) Mathson of Sitka, Ark.; John (Kim) Mathson of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren: Joshua, Lukas (Amanda), Brooke, Benjamin, Chadd, Zachary, Moriah, Eiric, Rosella and Peter; five siblings: Julius (Norma) Mathson of Brainerd; Ardis Larson of Iron Mountain, Mich.; Clarine Sanders of Brainerd; Melvin (Susan) Matson Andover; Delores (Carl) Watson of Deerwood; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rosella.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Faith Evangelical Free Church with Reverend Hillmore Williams and Reverend Allan Flint officiating and military rites by American Legion Post 91. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Bay Lake Cemetery in Deerwood.
