The future green space on the “Robbins block” could soon have a name.

The Main Street Project and the Spruce Up Austin are working together to turn a 50 by 65 foot space on the northwest corner of the parking lot into a green space with park benches and possibly picnic tables.

Main Street officials suggested the name Plaza On First, but the county board is looking to meet with the group to discuss other potential names.

Commissioner Tim Gabrielson suggested City-County Square to represent the cooperation between the city and county in building the Mower County Jail and Justice Center downtown.

Work on the parking lot is currently underway, but there’s currently no timetable on when the green space will be finished.

The county board typically refrains from naming buildings or sites after people, according to County Coordinator Craig Oscarson.
