A man who tried to steal 68 items — worth nearly $1,400 — from the Austin Shopko last summer was sentenced Friday.
Curtis Daren Johnson, 43, received a 365-day prison term, stayed one year. Johnson can stay out of prison by abiding by the terms of his probation during that year — including 50 hours community service and a written apology to Shopko.
According to a criminal complaint, Johnson walked out of Shopko with a shopping cart full of items on June 6.
A loss prevention employee spotted Johnson and confronted him in the parking lot. Johnson began to return to the store but then fled in his vehicle.
The Shopko employee was able to catch the vehicle’s license plate number and report that to police, which led them to Johnson.
He was also captured on in-store surveillance.
Officers went to Johnson’s 808 First Drive NW residence four days later and asked him about the incident.
He initially said he didn’t know about the attempted theft, but when told of the video footage, he confessed.
Johnson added that he tried to take the items for his daughter, who was living with him and in need of support.
