ST. PAUL — A 22-year-old man involved in a baseball-bat beating of a good Samaritan in St. Paul has been sentenced to twice the standard sentence for his offense.

Abdiaziz Hirsi was one of four men charged in Edwin Daniel’s beating May 25. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Hirsi was sentenced to 3½ years Thursday.

Authorities say a few days before the assault at a gas station, Daniel defended a female clerk who was being harassed by a group of men.

Prosecutor David Miller says security cameras showed the same men, including Hirsi, with bats.

The 39-year-old Daniel says he has short- and long-term memory problems and has been unable to work after his skull was fractured in five places.
