City looking for input on tax levy increase

Austin residents can weigh in on the city’s proposed 13 percent tax levy increase Tuesday at the annual Truth in Taxation meeting.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, and those in attendance will see a presentation about the numbers behind the proposed increase.
The proposed levy is $3.98million, compared to $4.13 million last year. Despite this year’s lower figure, many residents will see a hike in their taxes because of a loss of Minnesota’s Market Value Credit (MVC).
Finance Director Tom Dankert said the proposed tax levy is actually about 3.85 percent lower than last year’s levy, but the loss of MVC equates to a 12 to 13 percent increase.
Though the levy decreased in 2002 and 2003, the levy has grown every year since 2004.
