Election polls opened at 7 a.m. today and close at 8 p.m. to allow voters to choose three people from six candidates to represent them on Austin’s Public School Board, and to pass or refuse a levy referendum.

The levy operating referendum, if approved, would cost an owner of a $100,000 home an additional $84 per year.

The district is rolling two of its three referendums into one; the first ($53.35 per pupil) expires in November 2010 and the second ($251.18 per pupil) expires in November 2011. Instead of asking for a renewal at $304.53, the district is asking voters for $531.32 per pupil. It would generate $1.09 million in revenue for the district per year.

The current school board has approved the referendum, asking voters for the increase to compensate for a legislative funding freeze for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, and a poor outlook for future state funding.

If voters do not pass it this fall, the referendum could return for another vote next year.

Also on the ballot are six candidates vying for three spots on the school board.

Incumbents Richard Lees, David Simonson and Mary Kleis face three new candidates Aaron Keenan, Jeff Kritzer and Jeff Ollman.

Voters can still register today at the polls.

To register, voters must have proof of residence. Monday was the last day to submit absentee ballots.
