OWATONNA, Minn. — A state Health Department investigation finds an Owatonna nursing home is responsible for the death of an 84-year-old resident who was given an extra-large dose of an anxiety drug. He died the following day.

The Star Tribune reports Friday (http://bit.ly/tbF0ZY) that a state Health Department investigation holds the Owatonna Care Center responsible for Herbert Drescher’s death last July. The investigation found Drescher was not given Lorazepam for 10 days, then got 10 times the prescribed dosage.

Drescher’s death certificate listed cause of death as chronic lung disease. Care Center administrator Brenda Schrupp (SHRUP’) says that’s because it was unclear the overdose was the principle cause of death.

Schrupp says the facility has changed medication procedures at the direction of the state and also terminated three employees involved in the incident.
