Level 3 sex offender moves to Austin

A high-risk sex offender moved to Austin in November after being released from a Wisconsin state prison, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.
The Austin Police Department will provide information about 52-year-old Rex Allen Tande’s criminal history, as well as safety information, at a community meeting Dec. 8. According to an Austin Police Department news release, Tande is residing in the vicinity of Second Street and Third Avenue Northwest. He is classified as a Level 3 sex offender, meaning he has the highest likelihood of reoffending.
Tande has a history of sexual contact with girls ages 8-12, according to the news release. He was known to his victims, the release states.
According to Monroe County court administration, Tande was convicted of one count first-degree sexual assault of a child in 1996. Another count of first-degree sexual assault of a child was dismissed. He was sentenced to 15 years in a Wisconsin state prison and was recently released.
The community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, in City Hall Council Chambers. Representatives of the Minnesota Department of Corrections and the Austin Police Department will be available to answer questions.
