Austin Public Schools would like to invite all interested veterans to join the students for a special breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 11. Students at each school are planning to greet our veterans and serve them breakfast in honor of their service to America.

Public schools are a symbol of the types of freedoms our veterans have fought for, free and equal education for all. This is our chance to say thank you to the veterans in our community and also a chance for Austin Public School students to have direct contact with history.

If you are a veteran and are able to join us for the breakfast on Thursday, November 11, please choose the school where you would like to attend breakfast and call and confirm your attendance. Please RSVP this invitation for by Friday, November 5 by contacting the secretary at one of the following schools to place your reservation:

Banfield Elementary , breakfast served beginning at 7:30 Call 460-1200

Sumner Elementary, breakfast served beginning at 7:40 Call 460-1100

Veteran’s Day honors men and women who have served in the U.S. armed services. In November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued his Armistice Day proclamation.

The name was changed to Veterans’ Day by Act of Congress on May 24, 1954. In October of that year, President Eisenhower called on all citizens to observe the day by remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought so gallantly and through rededication to the task of promoting an enduring peace. The President referred to the change of name to Veterans’ Day in honor of the servicemen of all America’s wars.

The staff and students look forward to meeting you and providing this breakfast. We hope all veterans will accept this small token of our appreciation for their service and dedication to our country. Their servitude, dedication and devotion to America are an inspiration to our students. If you cannot attend, please accept our sincere thanks for your service to our community and our country.
