ADAMS — Mike Goergen did about all he could, but it wasn’t enough as the Southland boys basketball team saw their five game winning streak snapped in a 60-46 loss to Winona Cotter in the Rebel Classic Title game in Adams Friday.

Goergen, a junior forward, scored 17 of Southland’s 27 second half points and he finished with 26 points and nine rebounds, but no other Rebels’ player had more than six points in the loss.

“We took a step backwards tonight,” Southland head coach Jon Thalberg said. “Our defense was a step slow and we got caught trying to watch Mike Goergen. For five games, we were moving the ball around and tonight it was like nobody wanted to play offense and they thought Mike would just take care of it.”

Southland (5-1 overall) pulled to within 39-34 on a lay-up by Goergen, but the Rebels never got any closer than five in the second half.

Cotter built up its lead by hitting four threes in the first half. Two of those threes came from Gus Cochran, who led the Ramblers (2-2 overall) with 22 points.

“It didn’t concern me that much, because when you play zone, they’re going to hit some threes,” Thalberg said. “We just never got things going and couldn’t get any closer than five. Something would always go there way and they’d go back up seven.”
