Despite talk that Marian Clennon might request a recount in the Austin mayoral race, Clennon had not formally done so as of Friday afternoon.

According to City Clerk Lucy Johnson, Clennon came to her office Thursday morning to inquire about a recount. Johnson said Clennon indicated she knew she would have to pay for the recount out of pocket but would be willing to do so.

Clennon denied considering a recount but said, “the fact that anybody is talking about it makes me wonder if I should think about it.”

According to final vote totals, Clennon lost the race by 1,699 votes to Mayor Tom Stiehm. In the end, Stiehm pulled through with 61 percent of the vote, compared to Clennon’s 39 percent.

A discretionary recount means Clennon would have to pay election judges and city and county officials to conduct a recount of votes outside of normal business hours. Since this is a discretionary recount, workers would have to work either at night or during the weekend, so that it wouldn’t interfere with day-to-day operations.

Clennon has until Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. to formally file, Johnson said.

Auditor-Treasurer Doug Groh said he heard late Friday that Clennon was no longer considering a recount.

“I’m breathing a sigh of relief on that one,” he said.

Groh said another recount would be difficult with two already scheduled.
