Lansing may have to wait awhile for its new restaurant.

Dave Olson, property owner of Lansing Corners, said the deal with the renter, Kathy McKenzie, never materialized.

McKenzie announced in October her plans to open Lansing Corners, a restaurant four miles north of Austin on Highway 218. McKenzie planned to turn the historic diner — which has been empty since 2008 — into a steakhouse catering to high-end customers, she said in October. McKenzie said at the time she hoped to open the restaurant in January or February, although she said construction could push back the opening.

Olson said the property is for sale or lease again.

“It’s back to the drawing board,” he said. “There are quite a few options that would work out there.”

Olson said he is looking for someone with restaurant, catering or banquet experience, but he is flexible.

McKenzie was to lease the property from Olson for the first year, with a buy-out option after that, McKenzie said in October.

Lansing Corners has been vacant since Ron and Karen Valentine closed it in 2008, citing health reasons and the economy. Lansing corners originally opened in 1938 as a gas station and diner. The Valentines purchased the property from Lee and Donna Robbins in 1996 and added the banquet room in 1999.

Olson, owner of Apollo Liquor & Superette in Austin, bought the property in June at an auction for $65,000.

McKenzie was not available for comment.

Olson said anyone interested in renting or leasing can call him at 507-440-3816.
