Elmer B. Deick, 88.

Elmer was born in Austin, Minn., on Aug. 7, 1923, to Frank and Gertrude Deick. He passed away peacefully on Dec. 18, 2011, at the Faribault Senior Living in Faribault, Minn. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a member of St. Augustine’s Church where he attended elementary and middle school. As a youth, he was active in the local golden gloves boxing club. After graduating from Austin Senior High he worked a short time for Hormel and then worked on the AL-Can Highway in Canada. He joined the Merchant Marines and served as a chief petty officer during World War II.
He married Julia (Judy) Adams on May 12, 1943. After leaving the service, he and Judy spent a brief time in Wisconsin, returning to settle in Austin where he went back to work at Hormel’s Meat Packing Plant. He retired from Hormel’s after 38 years at the age of 62. Elmer also worked part time as a rural route mail carrier for 20 years. Among being an avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Moose Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; nine children: Sheila (Perry) Laing of Marquette, Mich., Brian (Carol) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Linda (John) Estrem of Owatonna, Minn., Alan (Beverly) of Stillwater, Minn., Marvin (Sherry) of New Brighton, Minn., Debra (Mike) Schrandt of Esko, Minn., Jan (Amy) of Anchorage, Alaska, Lisa Tenhoff of Columbia Heights, Minn., Dean (Marcia) of La Crosse, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard and Gary, and sisters, Shirley (Leo) Sayles and Nancy (John) Quinn.
He is Preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gertrude Deick; sisters, Florence Lenoch and Joyce Christensen.
The Deick family wishes to thank the staff at the Faribault Senior Living and Hospice for the wonderful care and attention they provided for him. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91.
