There’s a new face and a new flavor to the YMCA gymnastics program.

With a new director on board, the program is looking to forge ahead with an updated name and team concept.

Director Guy Knepper said this week the Austin YMCA gymnastics team will now officially go by “The Angels.”

Angels teams will be broken down into relating categories, ranging in skill levels. Beginning competitive teams will now be known as the “Little Wings,” followed by the “Wings,” “Halos.” The most advanced team will go by the “Guardians.”

Previously, the team was known as “The Pinks,” with teams of various levels labeled by colors. The Angels theme will help with team unity and will create a solid identity for the Austin Y, according to Knepper.

Knepper comes to the Austin gymnastics scene with over 20 years of gymnastics coaching experience. His years of instructing have led him throughout Missouri, Georgia, and, now, Minnesota.

In that time, he’s worked alongside USA coaches and Olympic athletes. He said he’s now hoping to take that experience and invest it into the Austin program.

Knepper said he’s stuck with the sport throughout the years not only because of his fascination with gymnastics, but also because of the morals and work ethic it instills athletes.

“I like to see kids work hard and see the light bulb go off in their eyes,” he said. “It can be an eye-opening experience. I think gymnastics is more than just hand stands and cartwheels.”

While Knepper is new to the Austin area, he’s not new to the YMCA scene. He’s been coaching with the Y off and on throughout his career. However, he’s joining the program after a stint in the private club setting.

Knepper said he’s looking forward to being back with the YMCA and the opportunity to work alongside Mark Raymond, the Austin varsity gymnastics coach.
