Austin teens taken to AMC, St. Marys after car accident

Five Austin teenagers were injured when their vehicle lost control and struck a large tree near Adams Friday night.

Jaclyn Bird, 16, Maggie Chidester, 16, Katelyn Joseph, 17, Madison Wuertz, 14, and Annissa Zynda, 17, were traveling eastbound on 200th Street when they hit a patch of slush and snow, became airborne and hit a tree. The accident occurred just west of 650th Avenue.

Adams Fire Department, Police Department and ambulance, along with Grand Meadow Police Department and ambulance, Mower County deputies and the Gold Cross responded to the accident.

All five teens were transported to Austin Medical Center and treated for “substantial injuries,” according to Sheriff Terese Amazi. Amazi said some of the girls were taken to St. Marys Hospital.

Bird, who was driving the 2007 Honda Accord, suffered a broken vertebrae. Passengers sustained head and leg injuries.

Amazi said four of the five teens were wearing their seatbelts.
