The Packers closed out the Steve’s Pizza/Austin Merchants Hot Shots girls holiday hockey tournament with a routine win as they allowed just one shot on goal in a 10-0 win over Windom (0-10 overall) in Riverside Arena Wednesday.
While she wasn’t necessarily looking for her shot, Austin junior forward Carley Grunewald finished with three goals and three assists as she collected the tournament puck for the Packers (7-7 overall).
“Kennedy (Thompson), Abby (Gallaher) and I weren’t really trying to score, we were trying to get other girls to score, who haven’t scored this season or their careers and it was fun to watch them get involved,” Grunewald said.
Senior defenseman Vanessa Talamantes slapped a shot off the post to make it 4-0 in the second period and freshman Mackenzie Trimble netted her first career goal when she redirected a shot by Justina Talmantes to make it 6-0.
Lea Semones and Leslie Fuerstenberg also scored in the win.
“We didn’t want to score more than ten on them and we got goals for a couple of girls who hadn’t scored yet this year,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “I wasn’t happy with yesterday’s game (an 8-3 New Prague) but I was happy with today on how we performed and the sportsmanship and unselfishness we showed.”
Spring Lake Park-St. Anthony won the tournament and Austin finished fifth out of six teams in the tournament.
“We’re at the halfway point of the season and I’m happy with how we did so far,” Bray said. “There’s a couple of games here or there where we could’ve played better, but overall we’re OK.”
