Freezing rain rolls through, weather advisory in effect

Area residents are seeing a slow drive this morning as a system drops rain, ice and possibly snow along the Interstate 90 corridor.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon Friday, largely because of ice on the roads.
“The big hazard will be the freezing rain,” said Zack Taylor, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “It doesn’t take a whole lot to impact roads.”
Cold air is expected to move through and change the rain over to snow, but little accumulation is expected.
After the weather tapers off around noon, the roads could still be slick. A high around 34 could melt the ice, but Taylor said shady spots will still be slippery.
The weather will take a warm turn Saturday with high near 47, which will come near the 50 degree record set in 1965.
“It’s going to be really warm,” Taylor said.
Drivers should be cautious going to and from New Year’s Eve parties Saturday night. Temperatures will fall to around 26 and a rain/snow mix is expected.
On Sunday, 2012 will be greeted with 23 and 26 mph winds and 50 mph gusts.
“The real story there will be the winds,” Taylor said.
The first few days of 2012 will see temperatures consistently in the 20s and teens, but temperatures are expected to rise by the end of the week, according to Taylor.
He also said there’s no snow in the forecast moving ahead.
“There’s really no big weather system that’s on our horizon,” Taylor said.
