The Hayfield boys basketball team took third place at the Tartan Holiday tournament when it beat Columbia Heights (3-5 overall) by a score of 64-53 in St. Paul Friday.
The Vikings (7-3 overall) trailed by two with 9:30 left in the game, but they rallied behind Bobbie Stephens, who scored 25 points and hit six threes, Cole Kruger, who had 16 points, and Brady Kramer, who had 15 points.
Stephens, who made the all-tournament team along with teammate Cole Kruger, didn’t score in Thursday’s loss to Spring Lake Park but he bounced back strong on Friday.
“He was a little under the weather yesterday, but I think he felt better today,” Hayfield assistant boys basketball coach Jon Kruger said.
Hayfield, a Class ‘AA’ school, picked up wins over a Class ‘AAAA’ school and a Class ‘AAA’ school at the Tartan Invite.
“We’re very pleased to come out of this 2-1,” Jon Kruger said. “It’s a bigger gym than we’re used to playing in and it’s a different brand of basketball in the cities. It’s more physical and it’s a lot quicker.”
