The Austin girls basketball team opened its season with an 84-58 loss at New Prague (3-0 overall) Tuesday.

The Packers (0-1 overall) stayed close for the games first 12 minutes as they trailed by just two with six minutes to go in the first half. But the Trojans boosted their lead to 45-33 by halftime and they put the game out of reach in the second half.

“This is probably the most competitive we’ve played them in three years,” Austin head coach Gary Peterson said. “We just fouled too much.”

New Prague went to the line 46 teams and it hit 27 of those attempts.

“Their whole offense was to drive to the basket and force things,” Peterson said. “They’re a pretty physical team.”
