Junk piling up at stalled housing development

Complaints regarding debris gathering up at a stalled development in Austin could lead to city council approval of junk removal.
According to city documents, complaints were made about downed trees, tires, concrete and construction material littering Fox Pointe in northwest Austin.
Complaints were sent to developer Roger Derrick on July 29 and Aug. 18.
The planning and zoning department investigated each time and found violations of city code.
The complaints state that Derrick would have 10 days to deal with the junk before they would be referred to city council.
The council will vote today to grant the planning and zoning department permission to contract out removal of the debris.
The Fox Pointe development — which has been criticized by residents who say they’re not getting what they paid for — was dealt a serious blow in July.
That’s when council voted against an amendment request to the condominium’s development plan.a
Afterward, Derrick said he didn’t know how the project could be completed now.
The amendment Derrick was looking for would’ve brought a road through the development — a road he said would’ve spurred development.
Residents Jim and Cathy Wegner, along with Adam and Shirle Dieser, weren’t sold on the claim and opposed Derrick’s efforts to move forward with the amendment.
“All he has to do is complete what he told the four of us he would,” Shirle Dieser said previously.
Derrick admitted work on the project has been slower than expected, and said he didn’t blame the residents for being angry. But he said the planning commission and residents aren’t seeing the whole picture when it comes to the development.
“We can’t do a little bit at a time. We have to do big pieces,” he said. “I think my argument is falling on dear ears.”
