Taxes, ice arenas up for discussion Tuesday

In addition to voting on a tax levy Tuesday, Austin City Council will be discussing a number of other budget items for 2010 and beyond during a work session.
The council will be looking at things such as closing a city ice arena, as well other issues that members would like to raise before the truth-in-taxation hearing — which would be Dec. 1 if approved.
The levy set for approval Tuesday evening would be a 4.59 percent increase from last year — which would come to about $10 extra per year on an owner of an average $102,000 house in Austin.
After Sept. 15, the levy can only be lowered, according to state law. The final levy would be certified by the end of the year.
