Twenty children will get the chance to shop with a hero at the Austin Wal-Mart on Tuesday evening.

Austin police officers and firefighters, along with Gold Cross respondents and Mower County Sheriff’s deputies, are planning to participate in the annual Shop with a Hero event at 6 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said about 20 children ages 2 to 12 are participating this year. Each child will receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card and will have the chance to shop with a public official who will help the kids keep track of the money and find gifts for their family.

“A lot of (the kids) are in foster care,” Krueger said. “They get introduced to an officer … and they are supposed to shop for their parents or siblings.”

The event is made possible by a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart.
