A slow start was too much for the Austin girls basketball team to overcome as they had a three-game winning streak come to an end in a 69-48 loss to Simley in Ove Berven Gym Tuesday.
The Packers (3-4 overall) had several breakaway chances in the first half, but they had 15 of their 25 giveaways in that frame, which saw them trail 30-19 at the break.
“We’d get turnovers out of the press and then we just turned it over right away. We didn’t capitalize,” Austin head coach Gary Peterson said. “We weren’t ready to play tonight. We got out-hustled and we weren’t really bringing them out of their zone very much.”
The Packers pulled to within 24-17 with 3:36 left in the first half after Jenna Svoboda scored on a put-back and hit a free throw but Simley scored nine straight early in the second half to put it out of reach.
Mary Kate Barinka hit a three to make it 38-28 with right before Simley’s run.
While Austin struggled with turnovers, Simley sharpshooter Brittney Willaert took over outside, hitting five-of-nine three-pointers while scoring 17 points.
“The kids have got to know where the shooters are at,” Peterson said.
Austin shot just 23 percent from the field and it allowed the Spartans to shoot 32 free throws.
“I told them that games are decided not by great plays, but by making fewer mistakes,” Peterson said. “We’ve got to play defense without fouling.”
Svoboda, who had 18 points, six rebounds and two steals, gave Austin a 4-3 lead with 15:40 left in the first half on a lay-up but the Packers never led again.
Babaye Oja had four points, five steals and four rebounds for Austin.
