Austin school board plans refresher on strategic plan

The Austin Public School board will take some time to revisit its strategic roadmap Monday.
Board members will work with Dennis Cheesebrow of TeamWorks International to review the five-year strategic plan they set last year.
“It’s more of a review of the strategic planning process that we did,” John Alberts, educational services director said. “It’s just to bring everybody back up to speed on strategic planning.”
Board members Angie Goetz and Greg Larson were elected to the board last November and weren’t a part of the strategic planning process which took several months over the 2010-2011 school year.
The school board approved a strategic roadmap in December, which outlined six general areas district officials will concentrate on for the next five years, from college readiness to effective lessons, cultural understanding, technological awareness, more community partnerships and using resources effectively.
While the general ideas sound more like a business textbook than a day at school, these goals are what district officials will have to look at when considering future initiatives, programs and lessons. What makes this latest round of strategic planning different from previous rounds is its flexibility, Alberts said last year.
District officials heard from students, staff, parents and community members in a survey conducted in fall 2010, which helped board members formulate their five-year strategic plan.
Since last year, various departments have given the board reports on their strategic plan goals in recent months during board meetings. Alberts said the board will review its first full year under the strategic roadmap toward the end of 2012.
