A flurry of penalties caught up to the Austin girls hockey team as it saw a two-goal lead slip away in the third period of a 6-3 loss to Winona in Riverside Arena.
Austin had 17 minutes of penalty time and Winona scored four powerplay goals in the third period.
“We let this one slip away and penalties plagued us,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “The girls on the penalty kill wore out and we got beat to the puck a lot.”
The Packers (5-13 overall, 1-8-1 Big Nine) picked up two penalties in a row early in the third to allow a goal and the Winhawks scored two more powerplay goals during a five-minute major penalty.
Austin led 3-1 after Abby Gallaher scored a shorhanded goal to start the third period, but that was they last goal they’d score.
Allison Hoban had 37 saves and the Packers attempted 31 shots.
