An 39-year-old Austin man who was charged with felony forgery after a unique injury prompted an investigation will likely be deported — along with his wife.
Domingo Esaul Sotoabad and Esperanza Hernandez-Hernandez, 38, were sentenced Thursday in Mower County court to 366-day stayed prison sentences, and both will be contacted by officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They had plead guilty to the charges last week.
The two had been found with a number of fraudulent documents, including Social Security cards, birth certificates and state IDs. Sotoabad had been working at Quality Pork Processors in Austin using the alias “Rodolfo Ramirez Jr.,” according to a court complaint.
Police were tipped off to Sotoabad on July 1 by the Austin Medical Center, who stated that a man later identified as Sotoabad had a bullet removed from his buttocks, according to the complaint.
A detective went to speak with Sotoabad about how he was shot. Through an AMC interpreter, Sotoabad first provided a false identification before admitting he was in the country illegally. He also said he had been shot in Los Angeles in 1991 when a stray bullet from a gang fight struck him.
Sotoabad’s 810 Sixth Ave. N.W. home was then searched on July 7, which is when officers found the fraudulent documents.
