The Austin gymnastics team came through with a season’s best score as it topped Mankato East 135.3-126.3 at the Austin YMCA Thursday.
“As a team we are looking good, not at our best yet, but good,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “I am excited to have a couple more weeks to work in the gym before we get to tournament time. This could be a fun team to watch at the end of the season.”
Austin dominated the bars competition as they took the top three spots — Selena Hataye was first — and they also had five of the top six spots.
Hataye, who was first in all-around, had a season high score of 8.95 in the bars.
“Selena has worked really hard to increase the difficulty of her routine since the first day of practice,” Raymond said. “She is now starting to see the results of all of her hard work.”
Carolyn Hackel led Austin in the vault, where the Packers hit three of their five routines.
“I think we have another point to point and a half left on this event before the end of the season,” Raymond said.
The beam has been a weak spot for the Packers, but they stepped up with a 32.8 as Hataye had an 8.575 and Abby Snater had an 8.65.
“The girls have worked really hard to increase the difficulty of their routine and now it is time to just throw it every day and gain confidence,” Raymond said. “I am hopeful that today marks an up swing in our beam performances.”
Austin took two of the top three spots in floor.
