Harold L. Allen, 94

Harold “Dick” LeMoyne Allen, who was born Nov. 22, 1917, in London, Minn., to Fred Elmer and Martena Louisa (Madsen) Allen, died Friday March 9, 2012, at St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin.

He graduated from High School in Mitchell, Iowa, in 1935 and was married to Ruth Marie Nelson on Aug. 25, 1942, at the Hayward Lutheran Church, Hayward, Minn. After a short time in the Army, he became the manager of the Speltz Grain Elevator (which later became the Oakland Co-op) in London, where he worked until his retirement in 1980. He was also Vice President of the London State bank from Jan. 20, 1964, until it was sold to the Sterling State Bank in 1991. Dick lived in the London area for most of his life. In 1957 he and his family moved to Austin where he lived until a fall in 2006 resulted in a broken hip which brought him to St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

He enjoyed working with the London Community, talking with the farmers, fishing, golfing, traveling and being with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Dick will be remembered for his great sense of humor and smiling disposition.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Gladys Allen, sister and brother-in-law, Mavis and Leonard Billedeau, brother-in-law and wife, Harold and Janeth Nelson.

Harold is survived by his wife, Ruth Allen, Austin; children, Sharon Schmeling (Tim Anderson) of Austin; John F. Allen of Schroeder, Minn.; Bonnie Moen (Allison) of Plover, Wis., five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with the Reverend Karen Behling officiating. Interment will be at Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle, Minn. Friends may call at the church from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
