The Austin Greyhounds hung on to beat Waseca 10-8 on the road Wednesday.
Waseca trailed by two with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Hounds’ shortstop John Frein made a diving stop and threw to second baseman Nick Bowe, who turned a double play to end the game.
“If that ball gets through they probably tie it or win it,” said Frein. “It was a big play.”
Waseca took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but the Hounds (8-12 overall) battled back by scoring six times in the fourth. Craig Braaten led off that frame with a solo home run, Austin scored two runs on an error, Mitch Kaplan hit a sacrifice fly and Joel Swatfager and Nick Rohne each had two out hits to score a run.
“That was a big rally and a good answer to their three runs,” Frein said.
Austin has now won two straight as it heads to Cold Spring this weekend for a tournament that will see them play three games.
“We now have a little momentum,” Frein said.
