A Grand Meadow man who allegedly drove around Mower County while drinking alcohol and shooting at things with two juveniles in his vehicle was charged Tuesday in Mower County Court.
Bradley J. Suess, 35, faces seven charges: drive-by shooting toward a building and animal cruelty — both felonies — two charges for third-degree DWI, hunting under the influence of alcohol, hunting with a blood-alcohol content of more than .08, and use of a light to spot or take animals while possessing firearms. If convicted, Suess could face three years in jail and a $6,000 fine.
One of the juveniles was arrested and the other was put into foster care.
Mower County Sheriff’s deputies received a report of shots fired from a vehicle in Pleasant Valley Township, at around 10:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. The witness got the vehicle’s license plate number and told police he believed the shooter shot his neighbor’s cat, according to the court complaint. An officer found the dead cat in the neighbor’s yard, which the homeowner identified as hers. Another officer later matched the vehicle description and license and stopped Suess and his passengers.
Officers immediately arrested the driver and passengers and found a .30-30 and .22 caliber rifle in the back, several other guns, three empty shell casings in the front of the vehicle, boxes of ammunition and several open beer cans on the floor, according to the court complaint. The complaint also states one of the passengers admitted to shooting the cat, and Suess admitted that he and the others were driving around looking to shoot raccoons. Suess said the act was “pure stupidity,” according to the complaint. Amazi said one of the juvenile’s fathers later retrieved the guns from law enforcement.
Suess also failed a blood-alcohol test after registering a .14 blood-alcohol content, according to the complaint. He is currently being held in Mower County Jail on $20,000 bail or $3,000 bail with conditions. His next court appearance is set for March 22.
