The People’s Quill: Memories

A lonesome train whistle wails in the dark of the night
a graduation picture that just wasn’t right
Roy Rodgers and Gene on the radio waves
Obscure photo’s of kin…was that Roger or Dave?
Crusader Rabbit on TV so snowy
Liberace and Berle both were so showy
Fury’s and Mustangs were the cars of their time
Mine was a Chevy, hardly sublime.
White bucks and saddle shoes covered our feet
They helped us rock to Elvis’s beat
A most popular song was from Percy Faith
A dreamy and slow “Theme From a Summer Place.”
There was a Tower upstairs where we’d dance and we’d strut
impressing the girls as we sucked in our gut
Then there was George’s next door with the pie’s
Sammy’s was good, but George took the prize.
Dragging Main Street with our wheels so bright
All cars in a row…my what a sight!
Up Main and down Oakland to First where we’d been
Back to Main Street and do it again.
There was Mantle and Yogi and aYankee named Roger
They all played the Series with the tough Brooklyn Dodgers
That was the year the Twins came from D.C. to our state
We Camillio and Earl as battery mates.
At home we played football or baseball…some basketball too
We weren’t all that good, we had nothing to prove
Jobs were aplenty if you wanted to work
Woolworths was always in need of a good soda jerk.
I met my prize on Senior Skip Day
We still have each other as we continue to gray.
That wasw by far the best day of my life
Except when I asked her to be my dear wife.
We’ve been through a lot as we went year by year
Sweet memories abound…most are still clear.
I can’t wait for tomorrow to start memories anew
Memories to last ‘til I say adieu.
