Eagles Club in the clear

The Austin Eagles Club is out of the red.
The club is current on its property taxes after owing more than $50,000 in unpaid property taxes, fees and interest.
The Eagles Club fell behind after its property taxes skyrocketed to almost $25,000 a year when it moved from the flood plain to its current location at 107 11th St. NE.
The club had until May of 2012 to catch up, but Club Secretary Debbie Retterath said the club wanted to pay off the debt as soon as possible.
“We did not like it hanging out there,” she said. “We wanted to get it done.”
According to Auditor-Treasurer Doug Groh, club officials dropped off a payment of more than $35,000 on Jan. 31 to catch up. The county board previously abated up to $10,000 in interest and fees.
The club held a number of fundraisers to raise the money, including a membership drive, which Retterath said was a big help.
While Retterath said it’s a huge relief to have the taxes paid off, she said the problems aren’t necessarily a thing of the past.
“We’re not out of the woods yet,” she said. “We still have substantial work to do to keep our taxes current.”
Challenges will continue in 2011 as the club is continuing to work on reclassifying its property tax status.
The club is working on a plan to stay current on its taxes in the future, and officials plan to inform club members of options at an upcoming meeting.
Without the help of the members and the community, the club could not have caught up.
“We thank the community and members at the eagles for their continued support,” Retterath said. “We hope people will continue to support us in the future.”
Retterath said the club has many event open to public like Sunday breakfasts and other meals.
