Detailing a maid’s life
Published 5:00 pm Saturday, February 19, 2011
Thanks to Sue Doocy at the Mower County Historical Society, I have more to share with you about Emma Julson Petersen. As a young teen, Emma was the upstairs maid for George and Lillian Hormel.
Emma Petersen, (1892-1989)
Emma A. Julson Peteren (Mrs. N.A.) was born April 23, 1892, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Lena Lund Julson and Thomas Julson.
Her marriage to N.A. Petersen took place Feb. 17, 1917, in Albert Lea, Minn. A resident of Austin, Minn., her home was at 401 7th St. SW. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Eastern Star.
Mrs. Petersen died June 6, 1989, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, Austin.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Therma Julson, Linden, Mich.”
According to the 1910 census record, Emma was born in Norway and the name was spelled ‘Joulson.’ I’m not sure which is correct although my bet is the obituary is accurate. (Emma’s parents were from Norway.)
Also of interest, this information from the obituary of Emma’s husband, Nels A. “Andy” Petersen:
“A retired building contractor, he was associated with Harold Busswitz and also operated his own business. Included in his work in Austin are St. loaf Lutheran Church Parish Home, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Grace Lutheran Church, the original Holy Cross Lutheran Church.”
