Salvation Army picnic Saturday

Austin area churches, speakers and community members will unite at Bandshell Park for the Salvation Army’s annual “One Nation Under God” picnic Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“The focus point in my mind is to get as many churches in Austin and the surrounding area to join in fellowship,” Salvation Army associate pastor Jonathan Baxter said.
“Ninety percent of the donations we collect will be going to the social service program of the Salvation Army to help people pay for rent and other utilities,” Baxter said.
Baxter hopes they will collect enough donations for some proceeds to fund the Salvation Army’s newly developed men’s fellowship program, which is designed to “help men adjust to a Christian life.”
“Speakers are the main focus,” Baxter said, but there will also be music, praise and fellowship. Harbor Light Core of Salvation will provide music and local volunteers will serve food throughout the day.
Lee Buckley, the first Advisor on Faith and Community Service appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, will be the keynote speaker, starting around 11 a.m.
“I am very knowledgeable and passionate about the mission and work of the Salvation Army. My comments will focus on their long standing commitment and its recent demonstration in the tornado relief efforts,” he said.
He will be followed by Mayor Tom Stiehm and Salvation Army Division Commander Daniel Sjogren.
The event is open to the public, and a picnic lunch is provided for a suggested $5 donation.
The Salvation Army is still looking for volunteers to serve at the picnic. If you are interested in helping, contact Jonathan Baxter at 437-4566.
