A Winona man appeared in Mower County court Tuesday for allegedly stealing a vehicle from Wells, Minn., on June 6 and bringing it to Austin.
Michael Robert Nelson, 28, faces a felony theft charge and a misdemeanor for driving with a revoked license.
Nelson was arrested at 310 Fourth Ave. SW last Sunday after Logan Alexander, 23, from Austin, led police to him. Alexander’s girlfriend had called police when she learned he was using a stolen vehicle, allegedly taken by Nelson. Alexander also faces a felony theft charge for using the vehicle.
It wasn’t Nelson’s first incident with a stolen vehicle in Austin — he crashed a different stolen vehicle earlier last Sunday while trying to flee police.
Police first identified him at the Plaza Lot. Believing he had a revoked license, police were set to confront Nelson when he fled in the vehicle.
Police tracked him but did not engage in a chase.
Nelson crashed into another car near 915 First Drive NW, injuring the passengers in that car.
Nelson and another man then exited the vehicle and fled through backyards.
Alexander and Nelson are both scheduled to appear in court again on June 25.
