Donovan Scheer

Donovan Carl Scheer passed away on March 2, 2011.

Donovan Carl Scheer will be remembered by friends and family as a story teller, a man exhibiting an inherent ability to understand mechanical devices, a lover of history, a motor cycle enthusiast, a firearms hobbyist and always a good one to have in a fishing boat.

Donovan lived an unusual life enjoying both the solitude of his shop, where he was happiest tinkering the time away always creatively fixing or improving an object, and also immensely enjoying visiting family and friends. The last decade of his life he truly led the life of a social butterfly.

Following his early years in Winnetoon, Neb., northern Iowa and southern Minnesota, Donovan amassed a wealth of stories. Donovan was a Korean War veteran having served in the U.S. Navy out of San Francisco, Calif. from 1950 to 1954. He greatly enjoyed the ports of call made around the Pacific and many stories owe their origin to those years.

Donovan imparted to his six children a “get it done” attitude, a love of nature and the natural world, an interest in the historical as well as the pre-historical and an ability to work with both hands and mind.

Donovan believed that a relationship with Christ was exemplified by a life of service. Whether serving the elderly by maintaining furnaces, remodeling church bathrooms, or serving kitchen duty for community and church dinners, Donovan felt all were acts of worship.

His friends and family will miss Donovan but always remember his stories.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday March 7, 2011, at St John’s Lutheran Church — Elkton with the Rev. Liz Erickson officiating. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Friends may call at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow on Sunday March 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. Condolences may be left on line at www.hindtfuneralhomes.com.
