Robert Darrel Halligan, 81, of Rose Creek, Minn. died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Adams Healthcare Center.
Bob was born June 21, 1930, in Austin, Minn. to James “Roland” and Violet (Hall) Halligan. He grew up in Austin where he attended Columbus Grade School and St. Augustine High School. After high school he attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn. Bob then enlisted in the Marines and served in the Korean War.
On Sept. 5, 1953, he married Sharon Fischer at St. Augustine Church in Austin. Bob worked for the Hormel Company, retiring on disability in 1986. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Hackensack, Minn. and St. Peter’s in Rose Creek.
Bob was an avid sports fan, especially of Notre Dame and the Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed reading, watching movies, yard work, and enjoying all nature had to offer while living at their lake home on Pine Mountain Lake in Backus, Minn. On of his greatest pleasures was entertaining family and friends at their lake home.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; seven children, David and Andrea Halligan, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Kathleen and Jim Stratton, Rose Creek, Maureen and Chris Bergan, Rose Creek, Timothy Halligan, Rochester, Minn., Terry and Christie Halligan, Rothschild, Wis., Colleen and Don Theobald, Leroy, Minn., Mary and Todd Schumann, Lakefield, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia and Don Hoffman, Austin, Sharon Woolsey, Belvidere, Ill.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rose Creek with Father Tom Loomis officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Military rites will be by American Legion Post No. 91. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
