Austin center fielder Katelyn Joseph spotted a fly ball, tracked it down, reached her glove out, and then ran right through the center field fence as another Rochester John Marshall homerun sailed over her head.

It was one of those days for the Packer softball team as the Rockets took both games of a doubleheader as they won the opener 15-1 in five innings and took the nightcap 15-1 in seven innings.

JM (8-1 overall, 7-1 Big Nine) tallied 30 hits in the sweep.

“We really didn’t know what they were actually like coming into this game,” said Joseph, who went three-for-three at the plate in the nightcap. “They showed up to play the game and just hit the crap out of the ball.”

The Rockets, who hit three homers in the doubleheader, got a bulk of their offense from Lizzy Hazzard, who went 5-for-8 with two homeruns and 9 RBIs on the day.

“They’re good,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said. “They put the ball in play and for the amount of action we had defensively, I thought we did a good job and I thought we had some solid line drives that got snagged.”

Austin (4-6 overall, 4-6 Big Nine) scored one of its two runs on the day in the bottom of the first inning in the opener when Abby Bickler singled and scored on an RBI by Abbey Ball to tie the game at one.

Things went downhill for Austin in the top of the second as 10 straight hitters reached base to open the frame for JM, which took an 11-1 lead and forced the Packers to put senior Marie Clennon on the mound in relief.

Due to soreness in her arm, Clennon wasn’t able to pitch in the second game.

“If Marie could’ve gotten a fresh start in game two, that could’ve made a world of difference (in the nightcap),” Strauss said. “We’ve got to get everybody healthy and it’s a long season.”

The Packers will play three games in the next two days as they host the Elks Tournament at Todd Park Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve just got to shake off today, because tommorow’s a brand new day,” Joseph said.
