ROCHESTER — The Southland baseball team now has its back to the wall.

After falling to Wabasha/Kellogg 10-2 Tuesday in a Section 1A playoff game in Mayo Field, the Rebels will now have to beat the Falcons in an elimination game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

W/K took control in the third when Jordan Dick doubled in a run and Zach Wolfe belted a two-run homer into the left field light post to make it 4-1.

Wolfe hit a three-run blast into left field in the sixth to put the game away.

“Chris (May) pitched all right, but he left a couple of balls up and when you do that deep in the playoffs they’re going to hit them,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said.

The Rebels (17-9 overall) stranded six runners in scoring position in the first three innings. In the first, they had runners on first and second with nobody out when Chris May grounded out, Adam Kiefer struck out and Josh Bamrick grounded out.

“The first inning didn’t help. We left way too many guys on base. Plus we had trouble on defense, you can’t have four errors and hope to win,” Retterath said.

The Rebels scored in the second on a botched grounder by W/K and they plated a run in the fourth on a two-out run scoring single by Mitch Nagele.

If Southland beats W/K Wednesday, it’s headed for the state tournament for the second straight year. But if the Rebels lose, their season is over.

“If they let this game eat them up, it’s not going to be any better tomorrow night,” Retterath said. “It’s a one game series and hopefully we play better defense.”
