August J. Schaub, 90, of Richfield, Minn., passed away just after dawn April 24, 2012.

August was born and raised in South Dakota. Early in the World War II, August left his studies to join the Army Air Force Pilot Training School. As an officer, he piloted heavy bombers until the end of the war. He enjoyed flying for the rest of his life. Returning to his studies after the war, August met Helen Mary Fay of Stephen, Minn. They soon married in 1946 and did not part until his death 66 years later. August graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minn. and Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind. He first practiced in Newton, Iowa.

Once while driving to Newton from Minneapolis, a blizzard forced August, Helen, and their baby daughter to shelter in Austin. They stayed to create a new practice and raise a family until retiring to Minneapolis in 1992. Gov. Karl Rolvaag appointed Dr. Schaub to his first five-year term on the Minnesota State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and Gov. Wendel Anderson appointed him to his second. For three of those years, he served as the board’s president. He was named Southeast Minnesota Chiropractor of the year three times and Minnesota Chiropractor of the year in 1978. He also earned licenses to practice in Iowa, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and Arkansas.

As a South Dakota farm boy during the Dust Bowl, a serviceman during the war, and a healer for most of his life, August worked long days, and yet made time for flying, travel, reading, study and weekends with his family boating on the Mississippi River from ports in Winona and Fountain City. August lives on in the hearts of his wife Helen; his five children, Patricia (and Vince) Nonnemacher, James Schaub, Janette (and Ken Ritterspach) Schaub, Tom (and Jan) Schaub, and Bill Schaub; and his three grandchildren whom he adored, Kathryn, Matthew, and Sarah Ritterspach.
