Ice cream headaches will likely be common in Adams this weekend.

The town’s annual Dairy Days festival begins Friday with a dodge ball tournament at 3:30 p.m. Organizer Curt Heimer said Adam’s dairy-themed festival makes it unique compared to other small town celebrations.

“Its just a good time,” Heimer said.

A movie will be shown at Denny’s Carwash on Friday night.

All week leading up to the festival, there will be a medallion hunt with new clues each day. The winner will receive cash and 12 half gallons of ice cream. A picture hunt will also be held each day with people vying to find the subject of a photograph.

Friday, June 11

Citywide rummage sales.

3:30 p.m. — Dodge ball tournament at the high school.

Dusk — outdoor movie at Denny’s Car Wash. Rain location: Adams American Legion.

Saturday, June 12

Citywide rummage sales continue.

7-9 a.m. — Poker Fun Walk/Bike Ride hosted by the Cub Scouts at the fire hall.

8 a.m.-noon — Lions Club Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction at the fire hall. Proceeds go to the pool.

9 a.m. — 5k/10k Run/Walk with kids mile run.

noon-4 p.m. — Scavenger Boulevard.

12:30 p.m. — Bean bag tournament will be held downtown.

1 p.m. — Sanctioned Kiddie Pedal Pull will be held downtown. Rain location: Coop Truck Wash.

2 p.m. — Waterfight will be held downtown

5-8:30 p.m. Steak Fry at the legion. Military Museum will be open during the meal.

5-7 p.m. — Budweiser Girls will be at the legion. Captain Morgan girls will also be at the legion.

8 p.m.-midnight — Dance with Shakerz at the legion

11p.m. and 12:50 a.m. — Sober Van will provide rides from the legion for a donation. Rides must be within a 15-mile radius of the legion.

Sunday June 13

11 a.m. — Pickup and tractor pull at the park

11 a.m.-3 p.m. — Quilt show at Sacred Heart auditorium

Noon — Coronation of Dairy Days princesses and prince

1 p.m. — Grand parade. Grand Marshals: Charlie and Marlene Ruechel.

2 p.m. — Adams Fire Department will host water fights on the basketball court.

3 p.m. — Entertainment and fun.

4-8 p.m. — chicken Fry at the legion.

6:30 p.m. — Ice cream eating contest in front of the elevator.

8 p.m. — Milking contest in front of the elevator.

City wide rummage sales start Friday and continue all weekend.

A new event to Saturday will be the 5 and 10 kilometer runs. The day will kick off with the Lions Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at the fire hall.

The traditional street dance will not be held this year, but the American Legion is holding a dance Saturday night with a beer garden.

The parade will be held Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by a chicken fry and raffles.

Unlike past Dairy Days, there will not a Civil War reenactment, but one will be held later in June.

The weekend will close with a milking contest at 8 p.m. at the elevator, and the ice cream eating contest at 6:30 p.m.

Once this year’s festival ends, the future of Dairy Days isn’t as certain. After a decade, the current Dairy Days committee is calling it quits. Heimer said they’re looking for a group of younger people to step up and take on the torch.

“It’s our last year, so we’re going to try to go out with a bang,” Heimer said.

Dairy Days has been going on in Adams for about 30 years, and Heimer said he can remember the summer festival dating back to his childhood. While he said they’ve enjoyed organizing the festival, it’s time to let new blood take over.

“It’s time to relax and just enjoy it now,” Heimer said.
