Turtle expected to peak Wednesday above flood stage (updated)

Rain, sleet and snow throughout the next couple days could continue to push Austin’s river depths to the limits.
The National Weather Service forecasts as much as three quarters to an inch of rain before tomorrow morning. That may turn into sleet and snow on Wednesday morning. However, snowfall totals should be less than an inch.
“Most of your stuff is going to fall in the form of rain, which is not good,” said Diane Cooper, NWS hydrologist in Chanhassen.
Current forecasts show the Cedar river at 10.4 feet (about four and a half feet shy of flood stage) and Turtle Creek at 9.69 feet, about a foot below flood stage.
NWS forecasts the Cedar to rise another 13.3 feet on Wednesday. The Turtle may reach 12 feet (moderate flood stage). Those forecasts only account for precipitation for the next 24 hours. Any more rainfall after that could cause the rivers to creep up more.
However, precipitation will likely break on Thursday with partly sunny skies. Although low temperatures in the 20s won’t likely slow river peaks, the river may begin subsiding in the next few days.
NWS meteorologists predict another system for this weekend; however, it may move south of Austin.
