Rebels beat Hayfield to move on to Section 1A tournament

Southland found its way back to the Section 1A baseball tournament when it beat Hayfield 12-0 in six innings to take second place in the Subsection 1A West Division tournament Monday at Seltz Field.
The third-seeded Rebels (14-8 overall) sent 10 hitters to the plate in the second inning as they scored six times to take a commanding lead. Hayfield committed two errors in the frame, and Matt Schroeder ripped a two-run triple to center field off Hayfield’s ace Ben Pollock.
“We took advantage of their miscues and we put the ball in play,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “Ben’s a good pitcher and the other day (when Southland beat Hayfield 1-0) they made the plays when we put it in play. He threw a good game again today, but they had a few miscues in the field and that’s pretty much the game right there.”
The Rebels came out strong after losing the title game to Blooming Prairie 3-1.
“They’re a very young team and I was a little leery of how losing that first game was going to affect them,” Retterath said. “But we told them they can’t get it back and now it’s win or go home.”
Southland will play Wabasha/Kellogg Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mayo Field. The Rebels split the season series and have also played Chatfield, the other team in the Section 1A tournament.
“Now we’ve seen everybody in our section. It’s going to be three teams from the Three Rivers and it’ll be an exciting tournament I think,” Retterath said.
Last year, Southland won the Section 1A tourney and went on to take second at state.
Pollock went three-for-three for second-seeded Hayfield (14-11 overall).
