Breast cancer runs in the family for the Carranzas.

Carley Carranza was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago last February, which she overcame. Her mother Jeanette faces the same fight today.

“It’s genetic,” Carley said. “I had it first and now my mother has it.”

That’s why a cancer benefit will be held for Jeanette Carranza from 4 to 11 p.m. Sunday, May 13, at the Moose Lodge in Austin.

“Everybody’s been unbelievable kind to help,” Carley said.

When Jeanette was diagnosed with cancer in January, the family faced a crisis: Jeanette was without insurance. Yet thanks to doctors and good advice, Jeanette was able to get the ball rolling on her cancer treatment, which includes chemotherapy.

Though Jeanette is facing the last of her chemotherapy sessions, the treatment takes its toll and leaves her tired. However, soon Jeanette won’t have to spend every other Friday at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, as Carley said doctors are pleased with Jeanette’s progress.

“It’s going really good,” Carley said.

What’s more, Jeanette will soon undergo surgery to prevent getting more cancer later on in life.

Family and friends are stepping up to help the Carranzas. Jeanette’s husband Carlos is a member of the Moose Lodge, one of the reasons why the local organization is stepping forward to help.

“It keeps your spirits up,” said Bud Johnson, family friend and Moose Lodge member.

There will be live entertainment at the benefit including the DC Drifters, Carlos Carranza, High Street and James Bracken. A BBQ pork sandwich dinner plate will be served along with side dishes for $5 a plate. There will be a silent auction and raffle on prizes including Piggy Blues Gift Cards, a handmade quilt, other handmade items, a massage packet and more. Proceeds will go to the Carranzas, breast cancer research and a cancer charity benefiting children, although the charity has yet to be determined.

In addition, the benefit was put on hold until Carley’s brother, Mick, could return from serving in the military in Kuwait.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Carley said. “Everybody’s been so kind and generous.”
